bet you never would have guessed...

Ok, it's past my bed time but reading Vox Day's post on women and tattoos reminded me of something. No, I don't have, want to have, or ever intend to get a tattoo. They hurt, and by the time you're 50 they look really, really lame. So what is it? I have this tiny little desire to get my nose pierced. Not a ring or anything. Just a tiny little flat stud on the side of one of my nostrils. I've seen a couple of women with them, and I think they're kind of interesting and attractive. However, there's a million reasons why that's not ever going to happen -number 1 of which is that it hurts, and I don't even like to get blood drawn. Also, I'm not so sure about the message that sends. It's really not very Audrey Hepburn-esque, and it's probably not the first thing many people associate with "nice Christian woman." But you ever see me with a tiny gold fleck on the side of my nose you'll know I've up and glued on a sequin for the afternoon just to see everyone's faces. Yeah, more than some of you wanted to know : )

P.S. I suppose maybe I should apologize for my comment about tattoos above since I've talked to so many who have them. I really, really hope that didn't come across as judgmental. However I have seen a few older tattoos (mostly the large ones) that didn't really fare well with age. Anyway, no offense intended, and I hope none taken.

Haha! You're so funny! I think that a tiny little stud looks nice, too. The only other piercing I'm okay with, though, is ear piercing. I actually don't even have my ears pierced. My parents told me I had to wait until I was sixteen, and by the time that birthday rolled around, it seemed like too much bother! (I'm very lazy.) On the subject of tattoos: I used to dislike them quite a lot. Fortunately, I became neutral towards them somewhere along the line, because my husband has four. Three of my four brothers have at least one, so they softened up along the way, too!

teeheehee ;) I entertained the same thought a few times, but kept thinking that I'd be seen as a rebel and wasn't sure if that was the impression I wanted to give.
I really don't think it has any bearing on what sort of person you are.. and really, it's not much different to having your ears pierced. But still, it's the sort of thing that 'nice conservative Christian women' don't do, isn't it!
Still an interesting idea to consider occasionally tho.. ;)

Although the back of the pack says "for ears only" or something similar, you could alway get a set of magnetic earrings and wear one on your nose. :)

I got a set for my daughter at Claire's. She wants to wear pretty earrings "like Mommy" but we don't plan on getting her ears pierced. She can choose when she's grown up.

Wow, that's funny. I didn't realize this was a common theme :D

Serena, I'm kind of like that about tattoos on other people. Me, sometimes I have a hard enough time figuring out what I want to wear for a few hours that trying to figure out what to get permanently etched on my skin would likely be either impossible or a disaster!

Here on the West Coast of Canada, it seems that piercings and tattoos are becoming more common even among "conservative" Christians. My pastor's wife just got a cute frog tattooed on her calf. Oops - actually she's American.....LOL My daughter (18) has gotten her nose pierced and it looks really sweet, I think. She also got a tattoo on her back: Be Strong and Courageous Joshua 1:9. And my son (16) got a "purity" tattoo (instead of a ring or something) on his arm. It says "True Love Waits".

Wondering how you're doing, Natalie? I keep checking your blog to see/hear any news.......:)

I don't want to start any heated debates, Natalie, but I wanted to tell you that I love my nose ring...and my tattoos. All three of them! I am a skirt wearing, conservative Christian homeschooler. I love Jesus and want to tell others about Him. Now, I didn't get these to use as a tool, but they sure do open up doors I would never be allowed through otherwise, kwim? I don't want to sway you either way, just wanted to show you another side. "Nice Christian Woman" is who you are on the inside, and it does show on the outside, but a tattoo or nosering is only part of the bigger picture. Happy dreams!

I'm really loving this conversation and all the comments. I didn't realize this was such a popular issue.

I am certainly not offended by your remark about tattoos looking less than shiny with age. Although tattoos smack of vanity, I am not so vain as to think that much of me will age terribly well!!!
